Stages of "aspering" building in Finland
Documented by Eino Nikkilä in 1935. Ahlainen (Hvittisbofjärd).

Hollowed aspen trunk has to be fine finished inside before expanding.
One side of the hollowed trunk has been heated over log fire and is being expanded now by means of spreading bars. The inside is being continuously covered with boiling tar
When both sides are expanded, shorter spreading bars must be pressed further down with heavy stones, to widen the bottom; at the same time their weight would press the boat's middle down and make her stems higher.
Ribs are fitted in while the bottom is still warm and soft. Then one strake will be nailed on each side.
